 2025 John Harris society AGM.  The next AGM of the John Harris society will be held on 15th March 2025 at 2pm in Troon Methodist Church. There will be a talk by the JHS President, Pol Hodge on the subject of Pagan Dumnonia to Christian Kernow. Refreshments will also be available after the talk.

 Online Talk by JHS Committee member Duncan Yeates on Wednesday 15th January at 6pm: Dr Duncan Yeates will be giving an online talk through the Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter, entitled "Poverty’s Friends Are Few: The Poetry and Life of John Harris". This talk will explore the life and work of John Harris, addressing the reasons why Harris should be a more well known part of Cornish literary history and why his legacy should be celebrated. The talk is expected to last 90 minutes.

 

2 January 2025

 The John Harris Society loses two former Presidents:  Two former presidents of the John Harris Society died within days of each other: Peter Bickford-Smith on 26th November 2024 and Jay Harris on 29th November 2024. A short obituary of both former Presidents can be read here

"Levant’s Engine"  The John Harris Society has very kindly been granted permission by Adam Bignell to publish his recent film about the Levant Engine, the last working, steam powered Cornish Beam Engine. In the film Adam uses words from John Harris poems read in Cornish. The film and further information can be seen here

Duncan Yeates publishes "Visions of Carn Brea": John Harris Society Committee member, Duncan Yeates was awarded a Doctorate in February 2024 for his work on John Harris. His work entitled "Visions of Carn Brea" has now been published online for all to see. A short profile of Duncan and a link to his work can be found here

JHS on the BBC: On Wednesday 31st July Tony Langford was interviewed on BBC Radio Cornwall about the life and work of John Harris. SUMMER WALK, Rescheduled for Friday June 28 2024 at 6.30pm A walk around Illogan Graveyard and the immediate village, led by well-known local historian David Thomas. Meet at Illogan Church at 6.30pm.  A link to the images from the walk are available here
