John Harris Society Summer Walk

1. Assemble outside 84 Killigrew Street at 2.25pm. View Plaque where John Harris lived and hear the story of his Wooden Study constructed at the rear, and some poetry. There is an option to walk up the steep Trelawney Road to Earle’s Retreat, or return to The Moor and catch the Town bus 67 at 3pm.
2. View the plaque at Earle’s Retreat where John Harris spent time as a Scripture Reader. (Estimated time at Earle’s Retreat 3.05 – 3.15pm)
3. Take a leisurely walk (mostly downhill and level, about two-thirds of a mile) through Fox Rosehill Gardens. Hear the history of the gardens and Harris’ link with the Fox family. Walk along Melvill Road to Princess Pavilion and Gyllyngdune Gardens (Arriving about 4pm).
4. Listen to his poems, including ‘Gyllyngdune’ and hear the story of the stone tablet with 3 verses of the poem inscribed on it.
5. Relax in the garden and/or take refreshments in the café.
6. Walk the short distance down through the garden to Cliff Road to catch the bus back to The Moor OR walk back to The Moor through the main street in Falmouth. (If you walk, allow 30 minutes to do so.)
7. (Further poems/stories will be shared during the afternoon.)

John Harris Birthday Celebrations 2025
Thursday, 9th October 2.30pm: A guided tour of the National Trust’s East Pool and Agar Mine. Exclusively for JHS members. Entry free to those JHS members who are also members of the National Trust. Those who are not Trust members will be required to pay the standard entry fee. Meet at East Pool (Satnav TR15 3NH). Park on Morrisons’ car park, far end.
Sunday, 12th October 10.30am: Troon Methodist Church. A service celebrating the life of John Harris. Led by Adrian Mitchell – Chair of the John Harris Society. No need to book. Early arrival is recommended to get a parking space fairly close.
Sunday, 12th October 12.30pm arrival for 1.00pm Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth. A two-course Birthday Lunch in the Venetian Room. The cost of the meal is £28 per person. If you are coming to the lunch, please complete and return the booking slip by 4th October and please also let us have your menu choices – see separate forms in download links below.

SUMMER WALK, Rescheduled for Friday June 28 2024 at 6.30pm
A walk around Illogan Graveyard and the immediate village, led by well-known local historian David Thomas. Meet at Illogan Church at 6.30pm.
