Some Scenes From The Life of John Harris

Filmed mainly around Carn Brea, Troon and the Shire Horse Farm and Carriage Museum at Treskillard this summer, this is a 10 minute docudrama by Porthtowan writer, Caroline Palmer, about the Cornish miner poet’s life and that of his family, focusing around the time when John and his family moved from Troon to Falmouth, bringing about a massive change in their way of life.

A selection of John’s poems are featured, some of which have been set to music and sung by Sue Farmer, who created a musical some years ago about the poet.  Caroline co-directed the film with Sabrina Scollan, a postgraduate student from University College Falmouth, who also also did the edit.  The shooting was performed by fellow students, Chi-Lok Wong, Dan Moss, Lisa Williams and Fergus Tanner.

Around thirty five people, including University College Falmouth students, local writers, actors and  film makers were involved in one way or the other in the making of this film. John Harris was one of Cornwall’s most famous sons.  John published 16 books of poetry and wrote 100 hymns, and a number of tracts on subjects ranging through slavery, war, alcohol abuse and cruelty to animals, despite the hardness and busyness of his life, even beating Lord Tennyson to the Tercentenary Shakespeare prize in 1864!

John Harris’s writing is also an excellent primary historical source for life, both in the countryside and the town, in Cornwall in his period (1820-1884).  His subject matter ranges widely across a large number of topics, both local to Cornwall and those with a much wider appeal.

The DVD is on sale for £4 (+ £1 p and p) from Caroline who can be contacted on 01209 890102 or caroline@monkeyrockdesigns.com.

Copies can also be obtained from The Cornish Centre and also the Emporium, both in Redruth, and Bonythons Bookshop in Truro. http://www.bonythonbookshop.co.uk   (who take credit card purchases)
